Facilitative competency-based coaching is an approach to school leadership development in which two people (coach and principal) work together around an agreed upon set of competencies (skills, knowledge and behaviors). The coach creates an environment in which the principal engages in critical and targeted reflection on her/his practice as it relates to the competencies with the goal of facilitating the paradigm or behavioral shifts necessary for the principal to develop her/his leadership capacity. The majority of coaching takes place at the principal's school and often follows an observation of the principal's leadership practice.
