Transfer schools are small, academically rigorous, non-traditional high schools that serve over-age and under-credited students and those who have previously discontinued studies. Open to students who have been enrolled in a New York City public school for at least one year, Transfer schools offer a personalized learning environment, a strong advisory component, rigorous academic standards, student-centered pedagogy, support to meet instructional and developmental goals, and a “future focus” on career opportunities and higher education.
Transfer school principals must be highly skilled in community-building, reconnecting youth with school and creating individualized instructional strategies to tackle their students’ diverse academic, social and emotional needs. The Transfer School Scholars Program, offered through our Aspiring Principals Program (APP), provides intensive training for new leaders of existing and newly created Transfer schools and is specifically designed to give these aspiring principals experience with the unique needs of the students these schools serve. Leadership Academy coaches provide ongoing training and support during the early years of the principal’s career through the New School Intensive (NSI) program.
