The NYC Leadership Academy provides workshops designed to support NYC Department of Education (NYCDOE) school leaders in the areas of instructional leadership and accountability. Using Data to Improve Instruction - Progress Reports Part 1
This is a series of practical workshops that will enhance your understanding and use of data to drive decision making at your school. This workshop will provide an overview of the Progress Report, its structure and the different components that schools are measured on. Participants will gain an understanding of each measure under the categories of School Environment, Student Performance, Student Progress and Closing the Achievement Gap. Using their own Progress Report, participants will identify needs and use the data to determine next steps for improving student outcomes.

Using Data to Improve Instruction - Progress Reports Part 2 (Laptop Required)
This workshop will provide a brief review of the structure of the Progress Report and recent changes and discuss how schools are examining the trends and patterns of progress over the past two years. Participants will gain a more detailed understanding of how data is used to generate their Progress Report, how it's organized, scored and the comparisons across peer schools and city. By working with school data (from ITT and ARIS) participants can better analyze the trends and patterns of student performance in their schools. Participants will be equipped with strategies on using data to set high learning goals and develop plans to improve student learning both at the school and classroom levels.

Quality Review I. "An Overview of Changes"
This workshop highlights the changes in the Quality Review process for the 2009-2010 school year. The relationship between the leadership competencies and the QR as a lens for school improvement will be examined. Participants will obtain a foundation to help them to develop their leadership skills with an emphasis on accountability.

Quality Review II. "The Road to School Improvement"
This workshop is designed to enable School Leaders to utilize the Quality Review as a blueprint of school improvement that is aligned to core competencies. Emphasis will be placed on completing the SSEF, examining the QR scoring rubic, and developing strategies to promote student achievement. Interactive activities will include sharing best practices, role play and group work with QR scenarios.

Leading Change: Developing High Performing Teams
During this workshop School Leaders will examine how high performing teams operate. They will then have the option of identifying one or more of their teams including but not limited to: SLT, Inquiry, Instructional Cabinet, and Administrative Cabinet. School leaders will take a critical look at the efficacy of their existing teams and determine how each team's practice can become more proficient in improving student performance. School leaders will leave with action plans to improve their own teams. This session will be aligned to the following School Leadership Competencies: (A) Personal leadership (B) Use of Data and (C) Development of Staff.

Use of Data Analysis for Strategic Planning
During this workshop school leaders are asked to bring pieces of their own school data to the session. These may include PR, QR, LES, TDI, ELA/Math Results, as well as any other sources of data. School leaders will take a look at their data through multiple lenses including, student learning, parent involvement, attendance issues, or a lens of the principal's choice. This valuable process will enable school leaders to triangulate data from own school, indentify patterns and trends, understand implications on budget, staff and professional development, and plan appropriate next steps. This session will be aligned to the following School leadership Competencies: (A) Personal leadership, and (B) Use of Data.

Effective Communication to Move your Instructional Agenda
During this workshop School Leaders will take some time to hone their vision for the upcoming year, understand the importance of and form a consistent message, develop a strategic communication plan that will help them address various stakeholders and identify leverage points, and give them the opportunity to practice conversations and other modes of communicating their message. This will be broken down into 3 parts: setting direction for 2009-2010, developing a Strategic Communication Plan, and getting your message across.

Teacher Data Initiative - Analysis, Strategies, and Conversations (for Administrators of grades 4-8)
Provides an overview of the Teacher Data Initiative report, its structure and the component parts that go into the report for each school and teacher involved. Emotional Intelligence - Emotionally Intelligent Leadership and Building a Healthy Organization
School Leaders will learn about the Emotional Intelligence Leadership framework, its application to school-based challenges, and reflect on their own strengths as the primary representative of their school community. In particular, we will explore how modeling effective emotional management sets a baseline expectation for all staff, strategize about some common obstacles impacting staff morale, and discuss the importance of the principal as leadership coach, i.e. as an active developer of leadership throughout the system.
