Aspiring Principals Program

Our Aspiring Principals Program has been proven to positively impact leaders and ultimately students in New York City and nationally.

The impact of NYCLA-trained principals on student achievement has been demonstrated through a rigorous, independent study conducted by researchers from the Institute for Education and Social Policy at New York University. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study found that:

  • APP graduates demonstrated capacity to reverse declines in achievement of low-performing elementary and middle   schools.
  • APP graduates faced greater headwinds than other new principals, leading schools with greater levels of students eligible for free or reduced priced lunch, students who are over-age for their grade level, teachers who are inexperienced, and discipline issues.

  • APP graduates were able to turn those schools around, showing significant improvements in English Language Arts and Mathematics and substantial progress in closing the achievement gaps in ELA and math scores against comparable schools within just three years

School Leadership Coaching

Our school leadership coaching services are strengthening school leadership practice.

91% of participants in our Rhode Island Turnaround Leaders Program (TLP) who responded to a 2014 survey reported satisfaction with the coaching support. Respondents generally felt that their coach was able to push their thinking, that their coach was committed and responsive, and that the coaching relationship was built on trust. The vast majority of participants agreed that coaching positively impacted their leadership practice and improved their ability to develop the capacity of others.

In our 2014 NYC coaching feedback survey, nearly all (99%) of principals were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their coaching. Participants also provided feedback on the impact of coaching in specific areas:

District Leadership Training

NYCLA’s work with district leaders is highly regarded by our clients.
