Equity and cultural responsiveness are critical domains of the national school leadership standards. Leaders from the NYC Leadership Academy will share their expertise on leading for equity at the inaugural National Principals Conference at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia this weekend.

To demonstrate some of the innovations the NYC Leadership Academy is making in leadership development in the blended learning world, Chief Strategy Officer Nancy Gutierrez and National Facilitator and Designer Derick Spaulding will discuss how to use web-based learning to help sitting and aspiring principals lead for equity and access. Using an online simulation, participants will engage in practice and personal reflection on what they need to know and be able to do to lead for equity. This session will take place on Sunday, July 9, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 102A. Participants are encouraged to bring laptops.

To examine how leaders can assess the state of racial equity in their schools and use this insight to inform leadership priorities, Vice President of District Support Mary Rice-Boothe and Vice President of Leadership Coaching Services Michelle Jarney will lead a session called School Leadership and Equity: Diagnosing the State of Racial Equity in Your School. In this session, the facilitators will guide participants through the NYC Leadership Academy’s new Equity Diagnostic tool. This session will be held on Sunday, July 9, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. in 105AB.

The National Principals Conference is the first-ever joint conference for pre-k through 12th grade school leaders, organized by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
