School leaders have a much better chance of successfully creating equitable outcomes for students if they have the support of a school system’s leaders and central office staff.
We have seen firsthand that building the capacity of a system’s core leadership and their supporting teams can ensure that their work is aligned with the district’s strategic plan. Building the capacity of school system staff helps establish a stronger central office culture focused on schools and students, in turn laying the foundation for effective leadership development efforts moving forward.
The NYC Leadership Academy provides customized consulting to system-level leaders and their teams to help focus their work on supporting schools and school leaders. Themes include comparing current the state of schools and the system to the desired state; setting and aligning leadership goals that drive school and system improvement efforts; and checking progress and problem solving. Driven by the goals and context of these local partners, we design and facilitate a series of activities, including but not limited to: strategic plan implementation working sessions; senior leadership team retreats; one-on-one executive coaching; working sessions focused on specific problems of practice; and coaching skills development.
